Error Msg on Update: Directory does not exist or is not writable: /var/db/freebsd-update

Hello,
When I went to update my system, using freebsd-update fetch, I got the following error msg: "Directory does not exist or is not writable: /var/db/freebsd-update.
So, I created a directory with that name and verified that it was there by cd'ing to it and it was there. Tried update command again and got the exact same error msg again: "Directory does not exist or is not writable /var/db/free-bsd-update
Any suggestion as to what I might be doing wrong? Although I'm an experienced Linuxs user, I'm still a relative noob to BSD.
Many thanks,
